Who Is an Agency Care Assistant?

An Agency Care Assistant is a compassionate and skilled individual who assists service users with various aspects of daily living. They work through care agencies, providing services to people in their care homes or hospital settings.

Unlike permanent employees, agency care assistants often operate on a flexible basis, without fixed hours or a named contract. They may be considered temporary workers or be on zero-hours contracts.

Role of a Care Assistant:

Personal Care: Agency care assistants help with personal hygiene, dressing, grooming, meal preparation and toileting.

  • To show by personal example the highest standard of patient care and participate in active bedside nursing care.

  • To be aware of and meet the needs of the patients as specified in the care plans.

  • To liaise effectively with other professionals involved in the patient’s care, ensuring an integrated pattern of service delivery.

  • To check and administer drugs with another trained nurse, reporting any discrepancies to the Nurse-in-Charge and Matron.

  • To observe and report any changes in the patient’s condition and for this information to be entered in the patient’s records.

  • To assist in reviewing patient's Care Plans and to make suggestions about aspects of the patient's care planning.

  • To maintain good relations with patients, carers, and visitors.

  • To receive supervision to enhance and consolidate personal and clinical skills.

  • To understand the arrangements for ensuring that patients are safeguarded against the risk of abuse.

Companionship: Agency care assistants provide emotional support and engage in friendly conversations with service user.

Standards of Conduct for Care Assistant:

  • Protect the rights and promote the interests and well being of service users and carers

  • Strive to establish and maintain the trust and confidence of service users and carers

  • Promote autonomy of service users while safeguarding them as far as possible from danger or harm.

  • Respect the rights of service users while seeking to ensure that their behaviour doesn't harm themselves or other people

  • Uphold public trust and confidence in social care services.

  • Be accountable for the quality of your work and take responsibility for maintaining and improving your knowledge and skills.

Pay

The average salary for agency care assistants in the Northern Ireland is around £23,400 per year or approximately £12 per hour.

Entry-level positions may start at £21,450 per year, while experienced workers can earn up to £30,274 per year1.

Our Pay rate starts from £11 - 22 per hr.

How to Start:

Qualifications: While formal qualifications are not always required, compassion, patience, and good communication skills are essential. Agencies often provide training and opportunities for skill development.

  • Must have at least 6 months' experience working in a Hospital/Nursing Home

  • Must be registered with NISCC to work in Private Nursing Homes.
